José Henrique Lamensdorf is an English↔Portuguese translator in São Paulo, Brazil. His translation career began in 1973, as an intern while studying Mechanical Engineering. A freelance translator and consultant in training and development since 1987, he has worked with materials such as technical reports, documents, books, catalogs, among others. What really tickles him professionally is the chance to use as many skills as possible while localizing a complex training program—videos for dubbing, facilitator guides and workbooks for both translation and DTP, games and simulations requiring a local flavor, assessment software demanding localization of its inner code, presentations on CD-ROM that call for graphic arts craftsmanship—and the frequent challenge of extracting all this from source-language material that was not intended for a remake in a different language.
